Located about 17 miles outside of Chicago, Illinois is a large city known as Elmhurst. It is positioned in DuPage County and is one of the largest communities located therein. According to the United States Census Bureau, Elmhurst was home to about 46,000 people, making it the 6th largest city in DuPage County.
The original inhabitants of the area Elmhurst is located in were Native American Indians tribes. The Potawatomi peoples were among those settled in the area. Following the end of the Black Hawk War, the native peoples were moved west of the Mississippi which opened a door for European-American settlers. In 1842, Gerry Bates established a community on a plot of land that would later become the Elmhurst City Centre. In 1845, the community was named Cottage Hill following the opening of a post office. The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad arrived four years later and gave new life to the community. By 1869, the community changed its name to Elmhurst and by 1882 was incorporated.
Modern-day Elmhurst is the ideal place to raise a family in northern Illinois. It is characterized by tree-lined streets, friendly people, and easy access to downtown Chicago. Also located in the community are many recreational opportunities. Parks, shopping centers, and restaurants are located at various spots around the city.
