Located in DuPage County, Illinois is a large village known as Westmont. It is a suburb of Chicago and is located about 20 miles west of downtown Chicago. Westmont is surrounded by Downers Grove, Clarendon Hills, Darien, and Oak Brook. According to the United States Census Bureau, Westmont had a population of approximately 24,767. It is the 19th largest community in DuPage County.
Prior to the year 1833, the area Westmont is located in was inhabited by Native American Indians. Following the defeat of the native peoples in the Black Hawk War which resulted in their removal, European-American settlers moved into the area to establish farms and construct homes. The construction of canals brought easy transportation and foot traffic to the area and provided access to Chicago. It was quickly discovered by locals that better transportation was needed. This need was fulfilled by the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad. A station known as Gregg’s Station was constructed and served as a stop to load agricultural and dairy products. Eventually, individuals began settling around the station and quickly a community developed. This community became what is now Westmont, Illinois.
