Located southwest of downtown Chicago, Illinois is a large suburb known as Aurora. Native American Indians were the first individuals to inhabit the area where Aurora is located. In the early 1800s, Joseph McCarty arrived from New York and settled in what is now downtown Aurora. Shortly after his arrival, McCarty sent for his family, and a permanent settlement was established. The settlement was originally known as McCarty but after a United States Postal Service office was established the name of the settlement was changed to Aurora and the community has been identified under this name since.
